1st Annual Ridges Family Service Project

Today we had our Family Service Project including the Marla and Rand Ridges family, Aspen and Steve Hadley family, Ben and Sara Ridges family, Camille and Marty Davis family and the Emily and Dave Phillips family. We all gathered at the parent's home to knit hats for the infants and kids at Primary Children's Hospital. It was quite fun. I enjoy being hands on and doing crafty projects like this...plus it's for a good cause. We ended up knitting 20 hats total in about 2 hours...not too shabby. Here are a few pictures of our adventure. Enjoy.

The Day After The Day After Christmas

Well....The Christmas hustle and bustle should be over now for most people. This is the time when we can really focus on christ, his birth and his influence in our life. We can also look back at the year and reflect on the good times, the sad times, and the accomplishments we have made. We can remember loved ones we have lost and new friendships we have gained. We can also remember those who briefly walked through our hearts and left footprints that may never be washed away. Whether 2007 was monetarily prosperous or not will not matter in the grand perspective of things. What really matters is how many hearts we touched this last year.
We can try to count the number of people we might think we have helped but most likely there are many more we are unaware of. We can never know when a small and kind guesture makes a world of difference to another person. I have been the recipient of many of these guestures that are often performed without thought.
These few people are what make me trust the world a little too much and gives me hope for a safer, kinder world for our children. I want to thank those of you who open doors for others even if they could do it themselves. I want to thank those who help shovel their neighboors walkways and bake cookies for the new families in the neighboorhood. I want to thank those of you who donate your time and money to helping those who are not as fortunate as you. Thank you to those who inspire others and are role models. Thank you to those who spend a little more time with their family. Thank you to those who say "Hello" to a stranger and to those who support our troops. Thank you to those who try to enjoy life a little more. Thank you to those who make this world a better place one act of kindess at a time.
I try to think to myself "If everyone in the world did as I did...would this world be a better place?" I would hope the answer to this question would be 'Yes' for me.
In a few days we will get to make a New Year's Resolution that most people drop two weeks into the year. This year, let's make a resolution that is easy to keep not only for a year but for a lifetime. If you have an opportunity to serve, whether convenient or inconvenient, take the opportunity. It doesn't have to be a huge sacrifice like many may think. It could just be the simple acts as stated above. You never know how many lives you may touch or even change.

With that sappy side note..Let's have a Great 2008!!!

Christmas Curiosity

Here is a fun little Christmas questionaire...now that I am out of school I have time to do fun things like this every once in a while. Enjoy.
1.) Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?

Definitely Hot Chocolate! It's a texture issue.

2.) Does Santa wrap the presents or just sit them under the tree?

Santa always wraps presents for under the tree. Sometimes we even find gifts from elves, the reindeer and santa's little helper!

3.) Colored or white lights?

Both! I like colored for the christmas tree and white for icicle lights outside...but I also like colored for the trees outside.

4.) Do you hang mistletoe?

I don't...but maybe I should.

5.) When do you put your decorations up?

Between school, work and being an enthusiast for procrastination....sometimes Christmas Eve. (No they are not up yet)

6.) What is your favorite Holiday dish?

My grandma's crepes. see below for more details.

7.) Favorite Holiday memory as a child?

My brother and I were very spoiled at christmas so the best memory was walking into a room absolutely chalked full of presents! One year there were so many that I fell asleep before I opened them all. That's what christmas was all about as a child! Ahhh...The good old days...

8.) When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

I don't remember ever believing in Santa so I don't remember being told the truth...I do vaguely remember my brother telling me everything I was getting one year...hmmmm...maybe that had to do with it.

9.) Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

Yup. We always got to open a "faery gift" on Christmas eve. It usually consisted of something cozy that we could use at bedtime such as PJs, a blanket or a stuffed animal. Sometimes mom would get too excited to wait for christmas morning so she would have us open a couple gifts.

10.) How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?

Ben likes to get fresh trees but I don't mind either way. I use colored lights and use all my old childhood ornaments. Every year (since I can remember) we have picked a new special ornament for the tree so I use all of those. Plus ornaments that other's have gotten us.

11.) Snow: Love it or hate it?

Love it...but hate the cold since I am so cold intolerant. I would love warm snow...that would totally revolutionize the snow angel!

12.) Can you ice skate?

Didn't you know...I taught Chazz Michael Michaels everything he knows!

13.) What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?

The feeling of christmas. That feeling can only come when you are surrounded by family...preferrably in front of a roaring fire with some hot cocoa watching Muppet's Christmas Carol. :)

14.) What is your favorite holiday dessert?

I am not really a desert person but my favorite holiday desert is probably english toffee (since that is the only thing around).

15.) What is your favorite holiday tradition?

My favorite holiday tradition is going to my grandma's house on christmas morning and having a Crepe Feast. Mmmmm...we have Crepes, sausage, bacon, hot chocolate...mmm...

Another tradition I don't go without is putting up christmas decorations and wrapping gifs while watching Muppet's Christmas Carol...my favorite holiday movie. We also watch One Magic Christmas and try to catch "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" on TV.
Yet another Christmas tradition is making English Toffee. I am trying to perfect my recipe to make it taste just like my great grandma's.

16.) Which do you like best: giving or receiving?

I love giving and finding that special gift that you know they will love. I just wish I had more cash to get people the things I would like to.

17.) What is your favorite Christmas Song?

I like a lot of christmas tunes...Oh Holy Night by Josh Groban is one of my favorites.

18.) Do you like candy canes?

As long as they are fruity and fresh. I just ate a candy cane that I am pretty sure was at least 4 years old that I had used to decorate our christmas tree. It tasted weird.

19.) Favorite holiday movie?

Muppets Christmas Carol
Merry Christmas Everyone!
Enjoy the season and don't worry about the little things that don't really matter.

It's a white christmas

Here goes....

Two blondes went deep into the frozen woods in search of a Christmas tree. After hours of subzero temperatures and a few close calls with hungry wolves, one blonde turned to the other and said, "I'm chopping down the next tree I see. I don't care whether it's decorated or not."

S.W.A.G. : Stuff We All Get

So this weekend I attended the annual American Society of Health-System Pharmacists meeting in Las Vegas. Goal #1 was to check out all the possible residencies I could do after I graduated. Goal #2 was to collect as much crap as possible from all the manufacturers and drug reps! I did get some pretty cool swag...a book light, a laser pen, a pill counter with my name engraved on it, a drug information handbook, thousands of pens and notepads, a stress ball, a bunch of other useless fun things and a backpack to put it all in.
I also got the most excellent opportunity of experiencing a psychotic episode! It was super weird!
Besides going to the convention we had to take advantage of the Las Vegas situation and play a bit so we went to...FAO Schwartz in Caesar's Palace, well renowned for their awesome (and expensive) TOYS! This was the funnest...they actually had one of those life size pianos that Heather and I got to play (you will have to see the picture). Anyway...take a peek at the pictures (when I post them) and live vicariously through me.

As much fun as I had with my friends, I do say that Las Vegas is not for me.
I will post some pictures as soon as possible for you to enjoy.

Pissed Off

"If you didn't see this on the Tonight show, I hope you're sitting down when you read it. This is probably the funniest date story ever, first date or not! We have all had bad dates but this takes the cake.
Jay Leno went into the audience to find the most embarrassing first date that a woman ever had. The winner described her worst first date experience. There was absolutely no question as to why her tale took the prize!
She said it was midwinter...Snowing and quite cold...and the guy had taken her skiing in the mountains outside (Salt Lake City , Utah) . It was a day trip. They were strangers, after all, and truly had never met before. The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon. They were driving back down the mountain, when she gradually began to realize that she should not have had that extra soda. They were about an hour away from anywhere with a rest room and in the middle of nowhere! Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for a while. Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going, there came a point where she told him that he had better stop and let her go beside the road, or it would be the front seat of his car. They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and started. In the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself.
Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking. All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation. Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, the young lady discovered her buttocks were firmly glued against the car's fender. Thoughts of tongues frozen to poles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal. It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem due to the extreme cold. Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor of the moment, she answered her date's concerns about "what is taking so long" with a reply that indeed she was "freezing her butt off" and in need of some assistance! He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then, as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing. She too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves, they assessed her dilemma. Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem. Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal! Thinking about what had gotten her into the predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free. So, as she looked the other way, her first-time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender.
As the audience screamed in laughter, she took the Tonight Show prize hands down. Or perhaps that should be "pants down."
And you thought your first date was embarrassing. Jay Leno's comment..."This gives a whole new meaning to being pissed off." Oh, and how did the first date turn out? He became her husband and was sitting next to her on the Leno show."

Awesome News!!

It's been a whole week since I posted last! Wow. The class exams for the pharmacy college come in clusters....and I just finished the last exam for this bunch (Oncology!)...phew...I made it. :)

Anyway, I don't have anything too exciting today...I just thought this was hilarious... This bit of news came from the County Sheriff's Report in Park City.

"A man in Snyderville Basin told a 911 dispatcher that he was afraid of his mail order bride on October 7, 2007 at 11:14 pm"

Hehe... apparently they record everything in the Park Record from lost wallets in the park to mail-order brides gone wrong. Enjoy your day everyone!

If you have any awesome news stories like this...I would love to hear them!

Nicholas' Wild Animal Park

If you are wondering...Nicholas is wearing a monkey outfit.

Every year at about this time Nicholas gets spoiled beyond his wild belief. Food, pinatas, candy, friends, food, games, presents, food...mmmm....
This year the theme was Nicholas' Wild Animal Park. It was held at the Poplar Street Pub and it was decked out like a jungle full of wild animals, wild food, and a wild face painter! You will see what a good job she did in the photos! I couldn't believe it...there were at least twice as many kids running around as last year and I am pretty sure it will just keep growing. Anyway, Nicholas was a monkey for his birthday! Make sure you listen to the 3rd "jungle song"...it's awesome! Enjoy.

Loons and Moons

Again, from Steve. Enjoy.

Two doctors, a psychiatrist and a proctologist, opened an office in a small town and put up a sign reading:

"Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones: Hysterias and Posteriors."

The town council was not happy with the sign, so the doctors changed it to read:
"Schizoids and Hemorrhoids."
This was not acceptable either, so in an effort to satisfy the council, they changed the sign to "Catatonics and High Colonics." No go.
Next, they tried "Manic Depressives and Anal Retentives." Thumbs down again.
Then came "Minds and Behinds." Still no good.
Another attempt resulted in "Lost Souls and Butt Holes."
Unacceptable again! So they tried "Analysis and Anal Cysts." Not a chance.
"Nuts and Butts?" No way.
"Freaks and Cheeks?" Still no go.
"Loons and Moons?" Forget it.
Almost at their wit's end, the doctors finally came up with:
"Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Odds and Ends."
Everyone loved it.

All Hallows Eve or Halloween?

So where did we get the name "All Hallows Eve" anyway?

Well, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1st "All Saints Day" to commemorate the saints who died as martyrs for the church....possibly trying to replace the celtic festival of the dead, Samhain. This Nov 1st celebration was called "All Hallows" or "All Hallowmas" meaning "all saints day" from middle english. Naturally...October 31st became "All Hallows Eve" and then, as it is now, Halloween.

This is not to be confused with any or all of the Deathly Hallows.... :)

Bobbing For Apples?....Sick!

Where did the tradition "Bobbing For Apples" come from?

When the Celts (my peeps) and the Romans started merging their cultures, bobbing for apples became an All Hallows Eve tradition. It was originally to honor the Roman goddess, Pomona- the god of fruit and trees. Her symbol was in fact...the apple. Since the Romans honored her on a day late in October...the cultures combined and they started bobbing for apples on October 31st.
...Plus it is extra fun on Halloween (a day known for death) because what better way is there to spread infection to a whole group of people at once!...I challenge you to find a better way! ~S

A.R.U.P- Admirable. Rara Avis. Urbane. Professional.

Dr. Ron Weiss (uncle Ronnie) received the Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to Clinical Pathology on October 19th in New Orleans. This particular award is given to a member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology and recognizes significant contribution to Pathology and sustained service to the profession.

Dr. Weiss is currently a Professor of Pathology at the Universityof Utah and President of ARUP Laboratories. He is an extremely humble individual and very deserving of all the accolades.

Some may think that ARUP (Associated Regional and University Pathologists) describes Ronnie in his career...but I say Ronnie describes what ARUP really means....

Admirable
Rara Avis
Urbane
Professional

This is an outstanding accomplishment and a great example to those of us who are still trying to make a dent in the world. Thanks Ronnie!

Thoughts for Tots: To Treat or Not to Treat...That is the Question!

'Tis the season to feel yucky! Keep your kids healthy with good hygiene practices. When this fails...consider what you are putting into your child before you run to the store to fix that cough or runny nose. It must be safe, right?....it's over-the-counter! Well, here is everything you wanted to know (and more) about chillins, bugs and drugs.
The manufacturer of some very common cough and cold products for children have voluntarily withdrawn some of their combination products. This is not due to their questionable safety but to the misuse patterns that lead to overdose and in some cases death...particularly in children younger than two years. See the list in the right hand column for medications recalled.
.
The Real Scoop...
As pharmacists, we do not recommend the use of cough and cold products in children younger than two years old because they have not proven to be effective and have caused severe adverse effects. In this case, the risks outweigh the benefits. Here is why.

There is very limited data on the efficacy of these products and the data we do have show no evidence that OTC cough and cold medicines are effective in children.

Schroeder and Fahey looked at 7 trials of cough and cold products in children. All studies showed that antitussives (codeine and dextromethorphan), antihistamines (diphenhydramine, bromopheniramine, and chlorpheniramine), and antihistamine-decongestant combos were no more effective than placebo in treating cold symptoms. Expectorants (guaifenesin) did show mild improvement over placebo for children with a productive cough.

The potential side effects of these medications in the case of an accidental overdose include increased heart rate, muscle coordination disorders, nystagmus (involuntary rapid movement of the eyeball) and in extreme cases can cause the heart to stop and/or result in death.

The Pediatrician's Accrediting Body has come to the same conclusion not to use cough and cold products in children less than 2 years.
.
Fever
Believe it or not...fevers are great! It is our body's way of burning the heck out of bugs inside us! Let the child's body do its job as long as they (or mom) can tolerate it. (Don't forget to hydrate!)
There are certain instances, however, when we do get concerned about fever.
  1. If the temperature increases rapidly...because fevers can trigger seizures in small children (<5)
  2. If the fever is greater than 103.1 F. Above this Temp...all bets are off. The fever is no longer beneficial.
  3. If the infant is less than 3 months old.
What kind of thermometer is the best?...
Please throw away the cool space technology such as the infared forehead swipey thing...if you have it...do an experiment. First, try it right against your hairline. Now...try it just above your eyebrows. Fancy that...there is about a 10 degree difference there...just about the difference between being hypothermic and burning necrotic...just kidding...sort of....just don't use them. Sorry to say it, but tympanic is also not very reliable.
The most accurate of all thermometers is...drum roll please...the rectal one! Yay! Next in line is the oral, so depending on the age...choose one of these! :)
.
Blah...Blah...Blah...So when do I use what?

My first recommendation to all parents is to invest in a cold humidifier. Hydration is key! Keep the fluids coming...especially if the child has a fever. Bulb suction of nares or saline nasal spray may also provide relief.
Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin (ibuprofen) are both excellent choices to treat runny noses and coughs. They are relatively safe with minimal side effects. Ibuprofen may cause a little more upset stomach but may help the aches and runny nose better than Tylenol. Tylenol is usually better tolerated and does the trick for fevers (only if you need to treat of course!), sore throat and earaches.
Mucinex (guaifenesin) may be a good choice if the child has a productive cough. It will help break up the mucus so it can come up and out!
NO Pepto Bismol or aspirin!!! Salicylates can cause a severe disorder known as Reye's syndrome or even death.
.
Safety Tips and Tricks
  • A single caregiver should administer medicine (prevents accidental duplicate dosing).
  • Only use a single medicine.
  • Use an appropriate measuring device (silverware is not an appropriate measuring device!). The pharmacy will have these for you if you need one...just ask.
  • Use only the correct formulation. Adult vs Pediatric vs Infant...they are all different. Do not use the adult formulation.
  • Follow the instructions exactly as indicated on the box or as directed by a healthcare provider.
When to go to the Doctor
  1. If an infant less than 3 months gets a fever
  2. Children with a fever over 103 F.
  3. Fevers that last longer than 3 days.
  4. Any child with febrile seizures or stiff necks should go to the ER immediately.
Don't forget...use of these products does not help the cold go away faster; it just treats symptoms. Weigh the risks to benefits before taking any medication, especially for children.

How Ben met Sara

Ben and Sara's Engagement Photo

I have been tagged by Camille (my sister-in-law) to share the events of how Ben and I met. Conveniently this all happened 5 years ago! This November 27th will be our 5th year Anniversary! So here are some common questions we get from those who don't know us very well. Sorry....I'm long winded. Enjoy.

1.) How did you guys meet? Background: Ben was currently working for my uncle at Teraflex at the time. My cousin (Ben Falkner) also happened to work there so they were friends.
So, my cousin called me up one day and asked if I wanted to go see the Testaments with "us". I assumed this would include some of his siblings. So, I debated whether to even shower after work because I was dead, but hesitantly I did. When they came and picked me up, I couldn't help but notice it was all couples in the car. As we were heading downtown he asks me, "So do you know Ben Ridges who we set you up with?". I immediately thought to myself "I didn't know this was a date?!" so I replied, "No." So we met Ben at Carl's Junior downtown and rode over to the ZCMI Center and went to the food court for dinner. I wasn't sure if Ben was going to pay for me or if he even considered this a date so I said I wasn't hungry and just got a water to drink to avoid the awkwardness. I in fact was hungry. So we went and saw the Testaments. It was good. Then we went to Leatherby's after for ice cream...so I was starving by this time so I got a HUGE cup/bowl/gallon of Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream...and I ate it all...well I could have if everyone wasn't waiting for me to finish! I stopped hoovering the ice cream to look lady-like or whatever and we left. They dropped Ben off at his car and then dropped me off at home.
I think Ben said maybe 10 words to me the whole night...which I understand now being married to him for 5 years. I had fun but I thought I would never see him again. Little did I know...as I was eating my three pounds of ice cream Ben was falling in love....awwww.
So, not expecting to ever hear from him again I get a call a week later and it's Ben. He asked me to go to little Moab with him and we were inseparable ever since.

That date also happened to be the first date for Ben (my cousin) and his wife, Kim!...Interesting. There must have been something in the water...or ice cream.

....I sure am glad I showered.

2.) How long did you wait to get married? Here is the time frame for some significant events that year....We met May 15th (while I was still in High School mind you) and had the blind so-called "date". Then he called back a week later and we went to little Moab on May 25th. We were inseparable from then on. I graduated from High School on June 10th or so. We got engaged on July 22nd and got married on Wednesday November 27th 2002 in the Salt Lake Temple. The wedding was originally scheduled for December 21st, but due to some unforseen changes in circumstance we moved the wedding up.

3.) How did Ben propose?
Well, he took me up in the hills behind his house to see a waterfall and have a picnic. Ben had to baja the Blazer he was driving to get it up where he wanted to go. He showed me the waterfall and stealthly snuck away to initiate his plan. As I came around to the front of the car he had a blanket laid out. While on his knees he handed me some flowers, opened the ring box and asked me if I would marry him. Of course I said yes and hugged him. We stayed up there a little bit while we watched the sunset creep across the sky. I still remember the vivid colors of the clouds and how blue the sky was that evening. The song by Shawn Colvin called "Never Saw Blue Like That" seemed to perfectly depict the atmosphere and experience that day. That is why I had my sister-in-law Camille sing and play it for me at our wedding.

4.) What was the reception like?
The reception was beautiful! It was held at the Alumni House at the University of Utah on Saturday November 30th. A ring ceremony was held for those who were unable to attend the temple sealing. It was awesome. I had Camille and Tyler (a neighbor) sing 'The Prayer' ( in both English and Italian). My uncle Ronny, read a wedding blessing in Hebrew and we exchanged the rings. It was magical. I hope somebody got it on tape...I still haven't seen any film of it. (If you have a copy please let me know!)
I refused to have a line because...let's be honest...who wants to stand in a line to talk to the bride and groom or people you don't even know. On the flip side...I wasn't going to make my people stand in a line to talk to people they don't know. I wanted it to be fun and relaxing for everyone. Anyway...I wandered around and chatted with people and it turned out great. I had on a big pair of fluffy white socks to keep my tootsies warm. The cake was of course my favorite with Spice Cake and Buttercream Frosting. The flowers I chose were Stargazer Lilies and the decoration colors were Ivory and Red. It turned out absolutely fabulous! My dress was Ivory with champagne accents and a long train that busteled in the back.
5.) Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We couldn't go on a honeymoon so we stayed at the Anniversary Inn for two nights in the Country Garden Suite. We went to the Salt City Jail for dinner the night of our wedding and it was good and cheap...Bonus! The next day was Thanksgiving so we spent the day relaxing and lounging around. That night, we went to have dinner somewhere...and the only place that was nice enough and open was Spencer's Steakhouse...and what an excellent choice that was! It is now a tradition. We try to go back to Spencer's every year for our anniversary because it is so dang good! I definately recommend the steak...or the seafood pasta...or the Bleu Cheese Iceberg Head...or the......mmmm.....

Annual Ridges Family Camping Trip

This weekend we went on our Ridges Family Annual Camping Trip. Usually we go camping, or cabining or moabing, but this year we stayed here in town and spent the weekend together. We had dinner at Sizzlers, played some new games, watched some movies, went bowling, mud bogging, and jeeping up American Fork Canyon.

My Victory for this weekend was at the Bowling Alley...who knew?! I was clearly getting beat until the very end...I swept the game when I Turkeyed the 10th frame! Wahooo!

Here are some pictures of the weekend. Enjoy.

Got The Blues?

The poll votes have been tallied and the winner is....drum roll please..... Yellow.

Eghhhh....WRONG!!!

"A new study shows Blue’s best when it comes to packing the most nutrition into a taco shell or bowl of tortilla chips. Researchers from the home of the tortilla, Mexico, found blue corn tortillas contain 20% more protein than their white corn counterparts. They also have 7% less starch and a lower glycemic index (GI), which may be good news for dieters and people with diabetes.
Foods with a lower glycemic index are considered healthier because the sugar content is taken into the blood more slowly and provides a steady source of energy. Sugars in high-glycemic index foods are more likely to cause spikes in blood sugar and energy levels followed by a "sugar low". The white tortilla's glycemic index also increased with storage duration."

So isn't the blue just food coloring?....

"No....the blue color of the tortillas actually comes from "anthocyanins" in the corn, which are the same healthy compounds found in berries and red wine. "

All said, the health benefit may not be enough for you to switch over to blue corn tortillas or chips (unless you are hosting a BYU game) but think... now you are smarter than you were 1 minute ago! Food for thought!

Step Out to Fight Diabetes

Hey Everybody!

I just wanted to let you all know about a great opportunity to help those in your community with Diabetes! The University of Utah College of Pharmacy is participating in a fund-raising community walk event on Saturday September 29th. We have a team made up of students, faculty and anyone else who would like to participate representing the College of Pharmacy. The main route is from Heritage Park to the Hogle Zoo, but you can choose from either a 2.5, 4 or 5 mile route.
Our fund-raising goal was $3,000 this year, which we have already exceeded because of people like you, so keep the donations coming or become a part of the pharmacy team that will step out to fight Diabetes! Click HERE to enter the U of U College of Pharmacy's event website where you can get more info. This is where you can donate money or join the team yourself! We rely on donations, both large and small, to keep our research in progress. I unfortunately will be unable to attend this event so you will not see my name on the team list, but I hope you will all feel free to join in without me. These events are awsome and for a very worthy cause. You will have a blast! ~Sara

Shadows of Nothing: The Unknown Man

Hello everyone,

My brother-in-law, Marty Davis, has officially published his first book! Wahoo! It is a fictional mystery. It is called Shadows of Nothing: The Unknown Man. This is a big accomplishment so I would like everyone who is willing to support him to order a book! You can find it at amazon.com. It comes in both paperback edition and hardback. You won't see the picture on the cover (technical difficulties) so I have attached it here.

Camille stated this on their blog and I thought it was funny:

"Marty would like to add that there are two reasons he used a picture of himself on the book.
1. Lack of money for any professional model, or artists. and
2. Justin Timberlake called and said he needed some help bringing sexy back."

So let's all give him our support and spread the word about the next best selling author!

Kudos to you Marty!

Pleasanton Highland Games!!

Hey All,
I recently got back from Pleasanton, California. My band (The Wasatch and District Pipe Band) competes down there every year. It is the biggest games we go to each season so we look forward to it all year long. This was also one of the funnest band trips yet! Here are a few pictures to show what I was up to. Also...if you are wondering what that awsome music is you are hearing....they are called bagpipes...enjoy.

This is Lauren, me and Brandi at the Pleasanton Fair Grounds. It was hot....really hot.

I got me a pair of ghillies! In case you do not know, the 'ghillie brogue' is the traditional scottish shoe worn during competition....contrary to popular belief, it is not the cheap pair of payless shoes with super long laces. I have been in the band over 6 years now and this is my first pair! They are expensive...real expensive.

If you have ever been to San Francisco, this picture will need no explanation, but for those of you who have been deprived this privilege....there are artists that paint right on the pier. Not physically ON the pier but on their canvas on the pier. This is no ordinary artist's paint my friend...oh no...they create their masterpieces using only spray paint...and they finish one in less than 15 minutes! Can you believe that? Go see for yourself! It is worth going to The Cisco for this show alone...but you don't have to....you can also go for.....

...The Chocolate.
Anyway...We did better than we thought in competition! We took 3rd the first day and 2nd the second day. This was against 18 other bands. That's not all though...the drums and pipes also get scored individually....guess what our drum corps took...go on...guess! That's right....we took 2nd and 1st! Wahoo! Can't wait 'till next year!
Oh...and I almost forgot the most important part! The judges make comments on a score sheet for the band so we can keep improving. Guess what he said about the tenors?! He called us "Tasty"...that's right...we are now officially "Tasty Tenors" of the wasatch!

Bullet Bikes...Yikes!

Here is a lesson to all of you bullet bikers out there!

I was in the ER pulling up some IV Mannitol for a Trauma 1 that was coming in. FYI: Trauma 1 is life-threatening. So, the trauma is carried in on the stretcher and set down on the table. He is obviously unconscious and I could immediately see road rash covering his entire chest and arms. As the docs started to move out of the way...I saw his head was covered with a large amount of guaze soaked in blood. After they stabilized him they began to remove the guaze and as they finished taking it off, I saw a larg flap of his scalp and skull fall away from his head and blood started gushing out. This kid had a long laceration across the occipital portion of his head, all the way through his skull and into his brain. The doctors said that he was unsalvagable and they didn't want to waste blood resources on the lost case.
A little background information for you....The kid was in his twenties and riding a bullet bike without a helmet. He was obviously not invincible and was found unconscious on the side of the road, 100 feet from his bike. He probably would have lived had he worn a helmet. And don't go thinking..."Well, I wear a helmet. I'll be fine."...Because when you're flying over a hundred miles an hour down a road and hit a bump...you might as well just take your helmet off because you won't want to live through what the rest of your body is going to go through.

Just a thought. ~Sara

The Puppies

Here are pictures of my babies...

First came Lady, our rottweiler. She will turn 4 years old in September. She is very affectionate and wants to be loved all the time. She enjoys lounging around, running around outside, chewing on bones and biting her nails.

Nanook is a beautiful sable Alaskan Malamute. We got her to give Lady a sister to play with. She loved to run...and run...and run. She loved to chew everything, go camping and chase small furry creatures. She is currently living in Idaho with her family racing in dog sled races.

Third was Charlie. He is a funloving, playful Boxer. He is two and a half. He loves to lick everything he can...especially walls. He enjoys chewing on bones, playing soccer and sitting on Lady.

Doh-nuts!

Hey everyone!
Most current post:
The polls have spoken....it is split right down the middle. Half of you don't like anything in your fried dough...the other half of you make me sick...if I knew how to write out a vomit sound...I would do that right now...
Previous Post:
Look to the right....do you see the poll? I am curious to see how many people really like jelly or cream in their doughnuts. I'll give you some background....

At work a while ago, I started a pharmacy tradition called "Noveltuesday". This stemmed from my constant desire to curl up in front of a fire with a big blanket, watch a movie and eat novelty ice cream. So every Tuesday, the crew who was working would switch off bringing a novelty ice cream to share with everyone. Why Tuesday you ask?..Because it was the same people scheduled to work every tuesday. Soon enough everyone was asking to work on tuesdays and everyone knew about Noveltuesday. It became a pharmacy wide celebration and gave us all something to look forward to. Some people just brought novelty ice cream to share even when they weren't scheduled to bring it!
And so it began..."Noveltuesday" spread into "Wheatie Wednesday" in the summer, where we would bring a sugar overdosed childhood cereal that we would never actually buy for ourselves. This was also an excellent success and today was actually the last official "Wheatie Wednesday". I'll post a picture asap. Can I get a Woot Woot Wheatie Wednesday?!.....(woot woot).
So now that school is starting again, our schedules have changed and now most of the original crew works on friday. The first official "Fritter Friday" will commence next friday. "What will you be eating on Fritter Friday," you ask?
DOUGHNUTS!...Of Course!
So...we were discussing the rules of this event and I made a comment that we should probably avoid jellies and creams inside the doughnuts. I got strange looks from all the guys in the room and one said "That's like getting a hamburger without the burger....what's the point?!"

So....I want to hear your opinion! Jellies/Creams....Yay or Nay?
...And is this jelly phenomenon gender specific?

P.S. Poll ends Friday August 24th at 9:00 pm...So vote today!

C..eh..N..eh..D..eh...

I recently traveled to Ontario, Canada for the Scottish Pipe Band National Championship in Maxville with my band, the Wasatch and District Pipe Band. I was pretty ill for the first part of the trip so I missed some of the touring the band did in Quebec and Old Montreal. We were there for a week though so I did get to seem some fun stuff.
On Wednesday (Aug 1st) we performed in Quebec near the Chateau. This was such a cute, cozy little area. I wish I could have toured around more. A member of our band spoke fluent french so he was able to introduce us to the audience. I was pretty proud of myself that day because I ordered breakfast at McDonalds en francais.
Saturday (Aug 4th) we competed in Maxville and took fourth place. We were not expecting to place so well as we were competing against some excellent canadian bands, so we were extremely excited about this. We got to see some amazing grade 1 bands there...too bad our drum sargeant filmed over us competing to film them. :)
On Sunday, we competed in Montreal and ended up taking 1st place! We definately didn't expect that! We are all pretty stoked right now. We will be competing in Pleasanton, California over Labor day and hope we can do as well.
I did learn some new things about Canada...they have corn fields. Lots and lots of corn fields...And their drinks taste better than ours! Their 7-UP is actually good. Their salt and vinegar chips pretty much burned my mouth off too!
I also learned about the wild-life in Canada...apparently the Yak is NOT a mystical creature similar to the yetti and it does in fact exist...I was apparently mistaken. It is also not the size of a mammoth. We will speak no further on this.
Anyway...I had a most excellent time in Canada and hope to go back again real soon! ~Sara
