Bullet Bikes...Yikes!

Here is a lesson to all of you bullet bikers out there!

I was in the ER pulling up some IV Mannitol for a Trauma 1 that was coming in. FYI: Trauma 1 is life-threatening. So, the trauma is carried in on the stretcher and set down on the table. He is obviously unconscious and I could immediately see road rash covering his entire chest and arms. As the docs started to move out of the way...I saw his head was covered with a large amount of guaze soaked in blood. After they stabilized him they began to remove the guaze and as they finished taking it off, I saw a larg flap of his scalp and skull fall away from his head and blood started gushing out. This kid had a long laceration across the occipital portion of his head, all the way through his skull and into his brain. The doctors said that he was unsalvagable and they didn't want to waste blood resources on the lost case.
A little background information for you....The kid was in his twenties and riding a bullet bike without a helmet. He was obviously not invincible and was found unconscious on the side of the road, 100 feet from his bike. He probably would have lived had he worn a helmet. And don't go thinking..."Well, I wear a helmet. I'll be fine."...Because when you're flying over a hundred miles an hour down a road and hit a bump...you might as well just take your helmet off because you won't want to live through what the rest of your body is going to go through.

Just a thought. ~Sara
